26/12/11: Kauto Star created history with a fifth King George VI Chase victory in a perfect performance at Kempton Park. The ever-popular 11-year-old, ridden by Ruby Walsh, won the race on four successive occasions from 2006 before being beaten by Long Run last season. But the two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup champion gained revenge on this year's Gold Cup winner in spectacular style. The 3-1 chance jumped superbly to finish a length and a quarter ahead of the evens favourite Long Run. He quickened the pace heading down the back straight and his jumping kept him at the head of affairs as Long Run had some less than comfortable moments with his jumping under Sam Waley-Cohen. Although Long Run stayed on strongly in the home straight, he was unable to catch up on the winner.

Owner Paul Barber hailed Denman as "one of the greats" after injury forced connections to call time on the legendary staying chaser's career. The Paul Nicholls-trained 11-year-old was embarking upon what was likely to be his final campaign, which was due to begin in the Lexus Chase, a race he won four years ago, at Leopardstown on December 28 2011. But once a tendon injury was discovered after a routine piece of work earlier this week, Barber and Nicholls had no hesitation in retiring the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup and dual Hennessy Gold Cup winner.

Unbeaten Frankel cruised to his ninth successive victory as he landed the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on the inaugural British Champions Day at Ascot. The three-year-old colt, trained by Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by Tom Queally, was a comfortable winner on the country's richest ever raceday. Frankel took up the running from pacemaker Bullet Train approaching the final furlong and sauntered clear to win by four lengths from Excelebration, with Immortal Verse a further three and a half lengths back in third.

Imperial Commander has been ruled out for the season after suffering a tendon injury. The 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero was last seen pulling up in the Prestbury Park blue riband after suffering a broken blood vessel, but had been under going a pre-training regime at Mount Top Stud in Ireland. The 10-year-old was due to return to trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies in the near future but now looks set for an extended holiday after a tear was found in a foreleg tendon following light exercise earlier this week. Twiston-Davies said: "I'd imagine we won't see him back until next year now, but I would hope he will return. "I haven't seen it myself but the injury sounds very slight and he should be fine for next season."

The French-trained Pour Moi won a thrilling 2011 Epsom Derby as the Queen was denied a first victory in the race with her horse Carlton House third behind runner-up Treasure Beach. Derby debutant Mickael Barzalona, 19, stood up and saluted the crowd as he passed the winning line in the dying strides to triumph by a head on the 4-1 second favourite, trained by Andre Fabre. He just denied Treasure Beach in a photo finish with Carlton House three quarters of a length behind as a crowd of 100,000 roared the leaders on in a tight finale.

Dec 2009 - Kauto Star became the first horse to claim a record four consecutive victories in the King George VI Chase. The 8-13 favourite was never challenged. Ruby Walsh safely guided the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup hero over the last three fences for a great win. Madison du Berlais edged out Barbers Shop in a race for second. The triumph for Kauto Star sees him eclipse the achievements of Desert Orchid, who won Christmas showpiece 4 times in 5 years.

10/04/10: Tony McCoy ended his Grand National jinx in superb style as he claimed victory at the 15th attempt on board the 10-1 Don't Push It. He jumped the last with Black Apalachi but pulled away to give Jonjo O'Neill and JP McManus their first wins. Black Apalachi (14-1) was five lengths behind, ahead of State of Play (16-1). Joint favourite Big Fella Thanks finished 4th. McCoy, the 14-time champion jockey, has ridden more than 3,000 winners, but Grand National victory had remained frustratingly elusive before Saturday.
