SIX TO FOLLOW FOR 2007/2008 JUMP SEASON

GASPARA

KAUTO STAR Paul Nicholls                                                                                                    On all available evidence Kauto Star is the most likely winner of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. The dizzying level of ability he has shown is so far superior to anything else on offer that there is a case for arguing that the current quotes of 2/1 for him to retain his crown are more than fair. History teaches us though that bringing these great staying chasers back time and again is no easy task and the trials and tribulations that have beset Kicking King and War of Attrition since their respective triumphs prove it.

GUNGADU 7yo Paul Nicholls
A useful novice hurdler, Gungadu took three of his first four starts over fences, putting up his best performance when making every yard in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot in February; a performance which would have surely seen him aimed at the Royal & SunAlliance Chase had his owner and trainer not been represented by Denman. Instead he was targeted at the mile-longer National Hunt Chase at the Festival, where opinion was divided over whether he was a good thing. Technically on form he was thrown-in, but doubts surrounded whether his front-running style would work against him and whether his jumping would be good enough given that he had made serious blunders at important stages on both of his previous starts.Gungadu had just taken over when falling at the second last.Gungadu had just taken over when falling at the second last. Rated 146, he’ll get into the Hennessy off a weight of around 11st and will have a serious shout in a race that second-season chasers have an excellent record in. Although found out by four miles at Cheltenham, he stays three miles very well and is effective on everything from good to heavy ground.

WELL CHIEF D Pipe                                                                                                                His main target will still be the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Evens favourite for the race last season only to fall at the second. If Pipe can get him back to his best then he will take a lot of beating in March.

DENMAN  P NICHOLLS                                                                                                           His victory in the SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham was better than he was given credit for and if the Gold Cup is a true test of stamina in March I think he can outstay stable mate Kauto Star. It was interesting to read the column by owner Harry Findlay in the Racing Post about where his charge will go this season and I agree with him that Sandown would not be his track especially with the fences coming thick and fast down the far stretch. This horse needs time to use his devouring stride and despite a big weight I think connections are right to target the Hennessy. Remember Burrough Hill Lad won it with a big burden before going on to become a Gold Cup hero and this horse is capable of the same. Going back to the Gold Cup, Kauto Star had it all his own way last season. They went a relatively slow pace and only quickened from the top of the hill, and he was allowed to crawl closer in his own time. I don’t think, or at least I hope the same jockeys won’t play into his hands again, so if they do make the race a test of stamina this time around Denman is the one to take advantage.

MONETS GARDEN G Richards                                                                                                Beat an unfit Kauto Star last time out and will be targetting the King George and Cheltenham Gold Cup this season. Still improving and not far off the very best around.

SIX TO FOLLOW FOR 2007 FLAT SEASON

Archipenko:   Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
The wealth of juvenile talent at Aidan O'Brien's disposal makes it hard to identify which of his less exposed juveniles will make the transition to Pattern company. One who could fit the bill is the Kingmambo colt Archipenko. Still very immature on his debut in August, he reappeared after an absence of almost two months to run second to stablemate Spanish Harlem when apprentice-ridden at The Curragh. A mere week later he turned a Leopardstown maiden into a procession, beating anothe well-regarded stablemate Honoured Guest by six lengths.

Rainbow Promises   Trainer: Brian Meehan
Brian Meehan enjoyed a fantastic season with the likes of David Junior and Red Rocks from his new Manton base and Rainbow Promises could well provide him with some more big days. She has only won a run-of-the-mill six-furlong maiden at Lingfield
to date but the manner with which she scorched clear from off the home turn could do nothing but impress. There looks to be much more to come from the daughter of Came Home, a thought clearly held by owner Michael Tabor, who recently forked out to buy her. It will be a huge disappointment if he does not get a considerable return on his investment.

Arch Swing:    Trainer: John Oxx
The fillies outshone the colts in John Oxx's juvenile team during 2006, with pride of place going to Arch Swing, a relatively cheap yearling purchase who was unbeaten in two starts. After upstaging the useful Theann on her debut at The Curragh in
August, she returned to the venue for the Group 3 CL Weld Park Stakes the following month and ran out an emphatic winner. With a pair of 33/1 chances taking the minor money, the form may be open to question but the daughter of American Grade 1
winner Arch has the makings of a fine three-year-old at around one mile.

Duke Of Marmalade:    Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
The high-class form of Strategic Prince, the first British-trained horse home behind Teofilo and Holy Roman Emperor in the Dewhurst, ties in with Duke Of Marmalade who lost by just a neck to him in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. That was the third and final start of the season for the Danehill colt who made an eye-catching debut at Leopardstown in June and beat the subsequent Moyglare third Supposition in a maiden at The Curragh later that month. A laid-back individual, he should have no trouble establishing a presence at Pattern level, now that he has reportedly recovered from a fractured pastern.

Killybegs:     Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor
Killybegs may have only got his head in front once last season - in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket - but he went on to show some top-class form at around a mile with a series of excellent placed efforts. Those results were enough to attract the eye of Sheikh Mohammed, who got out the cheque book and added him to the Godolphin ranks for 2007. He looks the type of horse that will give his new owners plenty to shout about and it is not hard to see him being a big player in all the top events
at around eight furlongs. The Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot looks right up his street.

George Washington   Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
No 10 To Follow list would be complete without the most talked about Flat horse of 2006 considering his forthcoming  Ali-like return to the track. Having flopped at stud, 'Gorgeous George' gets to strut his stuff again having started pre-training at Ballydoyle under the adoring eye of his handler. He mixed temperament and brilliance in equal measures last season and it will be fascinating to see if he has matured mentally in the intervening period. If he has and can get the most out of his undoubted talent, then racegoers could be witness to something quite spectacular.

SIX TO FOLLOW FOR 2006/7 JUMP SEASON

HORSES TO NOTE:

BLACK JACK KETCHUM Jonjo O´Neill

Unbeaten last season winning at Cheltenham and Aintree he looks the best staying
novice hurdler seen for many a year. He has won two in bumpers and five over hurdles.
The Stayers hurdle will be the main target this season and with his potential untapped he should go all the way.

DETROIT CITY P J Hobbs

This versatile horse can win from 2m-3m but will  probably start off next season along a Champion Hurdle type route. He has got the pace for two miles but will stay 2 1/2. He won at both Cheltenham and Aintree last season. He won easier at Aintree than he won at Cheltenham, and has got a bit of class so he is still improving. He could be a future Champion Hurdler. He might start his Festival build-up Cheltenham’s Open Meeting in November with the Bula Hurdle another possible stepping-stone.

DENMAN Paul Nicholls

This classy hurdler is off chasing this season and his main target will be the
Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham in March. He has the build of an ideal chasing type and his touch of class should stand him in good stead. He could go to Exeter on Haldon Gold Cup Day for a two and a quarter mile chase but he wouldn't want the ground too quick.

VOY POR USTEDES Alan King

Beat Monet’s Garden by a length and a quarter in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at Cheltenham in March. There is no denying this is a classy young steeplechaser.
Runner up to Foreman in a Grade 1 contest at Aintree in April he has bags of speed
and should be a main contender for the Champion Chase in March.

LEADING RUN Noele Meade

He managed to beat Cheltenham Bumper winner Hairy Molly on no less than two occasions in bumpers however his age made him ineligible for the Cheltenham race.
Leading Run started his hurdling career off with a narrow win in a decent maiden
hurdle at Punchestown recently and will come on for the race. A top novice hurdle at the festival will be his main aim.

NATAL Paul Nicholls

Ran well behind Noland in the Supreme Novices' and was suited by two and a half miles at Aintree when he beat Blazing Bailey. He was Nicholls top-rated novice hurdler at 148 on the strength of that. Novice chasing will be his aim this season with top novice events his  main target. Needs decent ground, not too soft.

Horses that just missed out on the top six are worth a mention: Macs Joy, Paulo Dancer, Gungadu, Irish Invader, Our Vic.
