THE 2008 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 11 to 14, 2008. Man In The Know will be tipping horses every day through the festival. Check back daily.
Cheltenham sees top class jumping action over four great days, with each day playing host to a Championship race. The highlight of the opening day, Tuesday, is the Champion Hurdle run over 2m 1/2f, a true speed test for experienced hurdlers. The novice equivalent of this event is the Grade 1 Supreme Novices Hurdle over 2m 1/2f, run on the same day and is the curtain raiser to the whole meeting. On Wednesday, the fastest chasers in training contest the Queen Mother Championship Chase over 2 miles, while the novice division fight out the Grade 1 Arkle Chase, run the previous day. Wednesday's action draws to a close with the Champion Bumper. Thursday's feature is the Ladbrokes World Hurdle (formerly known as Stayers' hurdle, run over 3m and provides the ultimate stamina test for experienced hurdlers on Day 3, while the novices contest the Grade 1 Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle over 2m 5f.
Friday, the final day, gets underway with the Triumph Hurdle, and continues with the Blue Ribband event, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, a steeplechase run over 3m 2 1/2f (22 fences) and the ultimate test of speed and endurance for the best chasers around. The Grade 1 Sun Alliance Novices Chase over3m 1/2f is the novice equivalent and can often provide a stepping stone to the Gold Cup itself in future years. The meeting draws to a close each year with the Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle. A hurdles event, run over 2m1f, this is one of the most competitive races of the meeting.

Trained by Paul Nicholls, the South African import made an impressive debut over timber when winning at Doncaster and has any amount of improvement to come. 2.35 Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase (Grade 1) 2m
When RING THE BOSS won the Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle at Sandown beating Breedsbreeze and Wingman he looks awesome. He hacked up in that race and looks the most progressive hurdler this season. He then ran a solid race behind Jack The Giant carrying a big weight still in with a big shout at the last. He was then sent chasing and giving weight away on his debut he was only beaten a neck by Kruguyrova with Big Bucks back in third. That was a terrific run over fences for the first time and improvement is a certainty. As the Arkle is on day one there should be some cut in the ground which will help. He can set off in front and if he can adapt to the fences and jump well he could take some catching. 12/1 with Ladbrokes looks good value in an open looking race. 3.15 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy (Grade 1) 2m
Reigning champion hurdler Sublimity will defend his crown without the aid of another run. John Carr's eight-year-old has only been seen once so far this season, when he finished fourth behind Osana in the Boylesports.com International. Although connections discussed the possibility of a run on the all-weather at Dundalk, Carr will send him to Prestbury Park without a prep-race this has to be against the champ.
Dessie Hughes is in no hurry to decide whether Hardy Eustace will bid for a third Champion Hurdle triumph or take the longer option in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.
The gallant 11-year-old was put in his place by Sizing Europe in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown last month and Hughes believes Henry De Bromhead's charge is the main stumbling block to his veteran regaining his crown in the Smurfit
Kappa-sponsored showpiece. I think he will head for the Stayers Hurdle.
SIZING EUROPE arrived at Leopardstown for the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle on January 27 with something to prove. He had spectacularly made amends for falling on his reappearance at Punchestown when hacking up in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham, but many observers still crabbed the form. Some said the incessant rain that ensured the race was run in appalling conditions made the form unreliable. Some said that argument was a bit wet. And some said, 'So what. Even if it wasn't such a low-standard renewal, and even if the monsoon-like conditions made no difference, on official figures he's yet to show he can live with the best.' That last point was probably the most sensible. Until that is when Sizing Europe arrived at Leopardstown. To say he proved his point would be an injustice, he rather shoved it in the face of every critic, punter, racegoer and bookmaker in the land. Suddenly, even on official figures, he was the one to beat. He demolished dual Champion Hurdler Hardy Eustace and Al Eile with an imperious display that had the layers running for cover. Initially they went 4/1 from 8s for the Champion Hurdle. Then 100/30. Then 3/1, 11/4, 5/2. Now he's a top-price 9/4 shot. He bolted right away to score easily from Hardy Eustace and Al Eile at Leopardstown and on all known form this improver looks the one to beat at Cheltenham. Paul Nicholls inmate Master Minded won the Game Spirit Chase and is now favourite for the Champion Chase in some places. But there is a world of difference between plodding round Newbury's flat oval and running flat out at the Festival where you are constantly on the turn. He is clearly a very good horse and I couldn't knock him at all but I would still want to be on VOY POR USTEDES in the big one. He's probably a spring horse and always runs better at the end of a season. I thought he made pretty hard work of winning at Kempton last season before going on to land the Champion, where he was a different proposition with a bit of sun on his back and on better ground. He clearly came to himself in March last year and he shouldn't be forgotten. He is very much the one to beat given his record at the track. There's no getting away from the fact that Master Minded was impressive at Newbury, jumping with great fluency on only his third start in Britain. Voy Por Ustedes has been there, done that twice. King's charge showed great maturity to win an Arkle at five, but several have done so and taking the Champion as a five year old which is what Master Minded will attempt to do is a different story altogether. Tamarinbleu will set the race up perfectly for Voy Por Ustedes, who will be trained to the minute come March 12, and the seven-year-old can finally gain the recognition he deserves by winning his second successive Queen Mum. It is hard to make out a case for any of the opposition so the favourite gets the nod by default. If there was a chink in the favourites armour then Kasbah Bliss could take advantage. The most fascinating clash at the festival. Kauto Star and Denman have bossed the top staying chases all season and Nicholls is very lucky to have these two quality horses at the head of the betting. This is a match and no other horse is entitled to even get close to these two on all known form.
Denman was very impressive in winning the Aon Chase at Newbury but he should have been given the opposition he faced. When he was beaten in the novice hurdle at the Festival it seemed as though he couldn't cope with the occasion. He has matured this season and looks a top class chaser worthy of lining up in the big one. I still think Ruby Walsh is on the right horse in Kauto Star, he couldn't get off him, and he is the one they all have to beat. I can see Denman leading turning for home with Kauto Star waiting to pounce. Whereas Denman is a rellentless galloper Kauto Star has a finishing kick which could decide this. Both horses travel well and I would not be suprised if both are on the bridle going towards the last. Soft ground would level them up but preference is just for KAUTO STAR in a cracking race. 16/02/08: Kauto Star had been cut to even money favourite following his Ascot Chase win but the bookies suspended their betting on Saturday evening as rumours of an injury scare circulated. The Betfair market remained open however and as speculation grew and grew Kauto Star drifted to as big as 6.6 shortly after 7pm while Denman was backed at a low of 1.73. But news of the defending champion's well-being prompted Ladbrokes to reopen their market early on Sunday morning and they took the opportunity to cut Denman to 5/4 from 6/4 and have eased the Ascot winner to the same price.
